7 movies about gender on Netflix (+ a bonus)

Netflix is one of the most popular on demand streaming services in the world. Basically, everybody I know has an account on this platform. I love reading recommendations on what to watch so I thought I will try and make a list of great films/shows you can watch.

Instead of being one of those people (like me?) who plays “Friends” over and over again, you can benefit from these films that will make you take a long hard look at gender equality.

• She’s beautiful when she’s angry. An inspiring look at the brilliant, outrageous women who spread headed the 1960s women’s movement resonates with those who still face gender inequality.

• MissRepresentation. Explore how the mainstream media’s often disparaging portrayals of women contribute to the under-representation of female in positions of leadership.

• Feminists. What were they thinking? Revisiting 1970s photos of women that captured a feminist awakening, this film explores those women’s lives and examines the continued need for change.

• The true cost. The links between consumer pressure for low-cost high fashion and the meager existences of the sweatshop workers who produce those goods are explored.

• Lionheart. When her father falls ill, Adaeze steps up to run the family business and prove herself in a male-dominated world.

• Mona Lisa’s smile. A movie that has become a classic. In 1953, the women of Wellesley College are measured by how well they marry… until the arrival of a professor who threatens to upend the status quo.

• Period. End of sentence. This Academy award documentary shows that where menstruation can shame girls to drop out of school, these women are taking control.

I said “+a bonus” in the title because this last one is not a movie but a TV show.

• Grace and Frankie. This amazing show will destroy taboos about gender, age, traditional families and sexuality.
